What’s Behind a New High

511
A new high looks bullish, but the number of assets participating in the move can tell you much more about its quality.

Consider an index reaching a record high. If 70–80% of its components are also advancing, many sectors and individual stocks are contributing to the move. Demand is distributed across the market rather than concentrated in a few names.

Now imagine the index reaches another record several weeks later, but only 40% of its components are advancing. A handful of heavily weighted stocks are still strong enough to push the index higher, while much of the market has already started weakening.

The index made a higher high in both cases, but the conditions underneath it are very different.

This is where market breadth becomes useful.

Traders can compare the headline chart with measures such as the percentage of assets above important moving averages, advancing versus declining components, or the number of individual markets making new highs.

You do not need every measure to agree. The goal is to see whether participation is expanding or contracting as price moves.

For example, if an index breaks higher and the number of stocks making new highs increases alongside it, the breakout has broader participation behind it. If the index keeps rising while fewer stocks make new highs and more components begin trending lower, leadership is becoming increasingly concentrated.

Crypto can be viewed similarly.

If BTC breaks higher while ETH, SOL and a wider group of major cryptocurrencies also begin strengthening, participation is expanding. If BTC continues making new highs while most of the broader market remains weak, the same headline move is being driven by a much narrower part of the market.

Neither condition guarantees what happens next. Narrow leadership can persist for a long time, so weakening breadth should not automatically be treated as a reversal signal.

Instead, use breadth to judge the internal quality of the move.

Price tells you whether the market reached a new high.

Breadth tells you whether the rest of the market is actually coming with it.
