I buy on a good tip... at what seems like a good level. It will go up the next day or two, then start falling well below the break even and sit down there for sometimes months.

So I never know whether to set a stop loss, which then when it gets hit, often turns around and spikes up 30%! I never LOSE on a trade, I am just sitting on a bunch that are underwater
