The payments giant announced Thursday that it plans to purchase Swedish open-banking company Tink in a deal valued at €1.8 billion ($2.15 billion.) Open-banking technology makes it so people can easily link their bank accounts with fintech and other services and it’s become a hot area within the payments landscape, especially in Europe, where regulators have championed it as a way to drive fintech innovation in a privacy-compliant manner.
Tink uses an application programming interface ( ) to let customers verify accounts, access aggregated financial data, and build personal-finance tools, according to a Visa V, +0.46% release. The company, which is focused on Europe, works with more than 3,400 banks and financial institutions.
