Charter Communications Reports Second Quarter 2025 Results

2 min read

Charter Communications, Inc., operating under the Spectrum brand, has released its financial and operational results for the second quarter of 2025. The company, a leading broadband connectivity provider, reported a mixed performance with some areas of growth and others facing challenges.

Financial Highlights

For the second quarter of 2025, Charter reported a slight increase in total revenue, reaching $13.8 billion, a 0.6% year-over-year growth. This growth was driven by a 24.9% increase in residential mobile service revenue and a 2.8% rise in residential Internet revenue. However, the company faced a 9.9% decline in video revenue and a 6.7% drop in advertising sales revenue.

Net income attributable to Charter shareholders was $1.3 billion, up 5.7% from the same period last year. Adjusted EBITDA grew marginally by 0.5% to $5.7 billion. However, free cash flow decreased by 19.3% to $1.0 billion, primarily due to unfavorable changes in mobile device working capital and the timing of cash taxes and interest.

Business and Operational Highlights

Charter's total Internet customers decreased by 117,000 in the second quarter, bringing the total to 29.9 million. In contrast, the company saw an increase of 500,000 mobile lines, totaling 10.9 million mobile lines by the end of the quarter. The total number of customer relationships, excluding mobile-only relationships, stood at 31.2 million.

Residential revenue per customer increased by 1.7% to $122.86, driven by promotional rate step-ups and rate adjustments. However, the company experienced a decline in video customers, with total video customers decreasing by 80,000 in the quarter.

Strategic Initiatives and Corporate Developments

During the second quarter, Charter repurchased 4.5 million shares of its Class A common stock and Charter Communications Holdings, LLC common units for $1.7 billion. Additionally, Charter and Cox Communications announced a definitive agreement to combine their businesses, aiming to create an industry leader in mobile and broadband communications services.

Management's Perspective

Chris Winfrey, President and CEO of Charter, commented, "Our converged connectivity revenue grew by over 5% in the second quarter, with a long runway for growth. Our seamless connectivity products offer the fastest speeds at the best price. And our strategic investments in network evolution and convergence, rural build, U.S.-based service, and seamless entertainment innovation will accelerate future customer and revenue growth."

Future Outlook

Charter expects full-year 2025 capital expenditures to total approximately $11.5 billion, a decrease from the previous expectation of $12.0 billion. This adjustment reflects the timing of network evolution spend and lower commercial and subsidized rural line extensions spend. The company remains focused on its network evolution initiative and expanding its footprint in underserved communities.
