The fund seeks to provide income and capital appreciation by investing directly in a diversified portfolio of dividend-paying energy companies located primarily in Canada. It uses a covered call strategy to enhance yield while at times strategically utilizing oil futures to lower portfolio risk. The fund uses leverage, its maximum aggregate exposure to short selling, cash borrowing, and derivatives used for leverage is up to 300% of its daily NAV, as permitted by Canadian laws. It may use up to 50% of its NAV to borrow cash, short-sell, or use a combination of both. The fund may hold cash, money market instruments, and fixed income securities for cash management. Derivatives such as options, futures, forwards, and swaps are utilized for both hedging and non-hedging purposes. The fund may also generate additional income through lending, repurchase, and reverse repurchase transactions.
