IonQ signed a memorandum of understanding with the Energy Department to advance quantum technology in space.
The College Park, Md., quantum-computing company will design and execute an orbital demonstration of quantum-secure communications using its satellite platform. It will also explore quantum applications in space such as alternate position, navigation and timing.
IonQ's initial focus will be the demonstration of quantum-secure networking using its satellite assets. The memorandum provides a framework for other quantum capabilities in orbit, as well.
IonQ acquired quantum networking company Qubitekk in 2024 and space technology company Capella in 2025.
