Google Opens 5 Billion UK Data Center To Power AI Growth
Alphabet's Google GOOGL just flipped the switch on a new data center in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire part of a massive 5 billion investment to expand its UK footprint over the next two years.
The new site is built to handle soaring demand for Google's AI-driven services, from Cloud and Workspace to everyday tools like Search and Maps. More than 250 companies were involved in the build, most of them local, making the project a jobs and business boost long before opening day.
The wider investment also covers R&D and engineering, including projects at DeepMind, Google's London-based AI lab that's been pushing into science and healthcare breakthroughs. All told, Google says its plans will support around 8,250 UK jobs each year.
For Google, it's a bet that the UK will be a key hub in the global AI race. For the UK, it's a big show of confidence from one of tech's heaviest hitters.
