Advanced Micro Devices Secures $1 Billion DOE Partnership for Supercomputers

Less than 1 min read

The U.S. Department of Energy has partnered with Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD, Financials) to build two supercomputers in a $1 billion deal aimed at advancing research in energy, health, and defense.

The first system, called Lux, will go live within six months using AMD's MI355X AI chips and will deliver triple the AI power of current systems. The second, Discovery, based on AMD's MI430 chips, is due in 2029.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the systems will help drive progress in fusion energy and drug development, while also supporting U.S. nuclear security.

The DOE will host the machines, with AMD and partners including Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Oracle providing hardware and shared computing resources.
