The Bratislava Stock Exchange, commonly referred to as BSSE, was founded on March 15, 1991 and it is the sole responsible for the regulated market of securities. Its trading operations started in 1993 on a membership principle, which means that only authorized members can perform stock exchange transactions. It is located in the capital city of Bratislava and it has a market capitalization of € 5.4 billion.
The only official stock index for the Slovakian market is a capitalization weighted total return index, called SAX, which started in 1993 at a value of 100. Its highest point of 475 was reached during the summer of 2005. Among its listings, the most notable companies are Biotika, Nafta and OTP Banka Slovensko.
