The Vienna Stock Exchange (VIE) is the sole securities exchange of Austria and one of the oldest stock exchanges in Europe. It was founded in 1771 and is headquartered in Vienna, which is the country's capital, largest city and economic centre. The exchange is also known under the name Wiener Börse. Electronic trading is supported by the XETRA system, which stand for Exchange Electronic Trading. VIE lists 380 equity companies and has a market cap of EURO 120.6 billion. It also houses bonds and exchange traded funds. Over 75% of global trading turnover in Austrian stocks happens on the VIE.
Among its listings are well-known and actively traded companies such as Erste Group Bank, Voestalpine, Raiffeisen Bank International, Wienerberger and the Telekom Austria Group. The main stock index is the Austrian Traded Index (ATX) which tracks the prices of 20 blue-chip stocks from 9 different sectors. This capitalization-weighted price index is calculated in EURO and its composition is reviewed biannually. Other key indices are the ATX Prime containing all stocks listed on the prime market and the ATX Five with the 5 ATX stocks with the greatest weightings.
