Exchange-Traded Funds Mixed As Dow Hits 40,000 Mark For First Time

Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds were mixed, with IWM falling and IVV gaining. Actively-traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was up 0.2%.

US equity indexes rose, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average touching the 40,000 mark for the first time around midday Thursday after a string of macroeconomic data signaled weakness in the economy.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) eased 0.1% and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) was 0.2% lower.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) was up 0.2%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were higher.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) rose 0.2% while iShares PHLX Semiconductor (SOXX) gained 0.5%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) gained 0.4%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X shares (FAS) was up 1% and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was down 1.1%.

Commodities

Crude was up 0.6%; United States Oil Fund (USO) rose 0.3%. Natural gas was up 3.5% and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) increased 3.6%.

Gold was down 0.4% based on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) fell 0.3%. Silver was up 0.6% and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was fractionally higher.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) increased 1.5%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were higher.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) fell 0.1%; retail funds VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) was higher while SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) was lower.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) was fractionally lower and other funds iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were lower. Biotech ETF iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was down 0.1%.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) fell 0.4% while other industrial funds iShares U.S. Industrials (IYJ), and Vanguard Industrials (VIS) were lower.
