Copper miners rise as red metal soars to record highs

** Copper miners rise tracking prices of the red metal, after a recent rally triggered by short covering created momentum for speculators and funds to bet on higher prices of the metal used in the power and construction industries

** Benchmark three-month copper HG1! on the London Metal Exchange up 2.1% at $10,897 a metric ton, after peaking at $11,104.5, a gain of 30% since the start of the year

** U.S.-listed shares of global mining giant BHP Group BHP rise 0.6%

** Copper miners Southern Copper SCCO and Freeport-McMoRan FCX up 3.2% and 1.5%, respectively

** Canadian miners Teck Resources TECK, Hudbay Minerals HBM, Ero Copper ERO and First Quantum Minerals FM gain between 3.7% and 7.6%
