Apple Changes App Download Policy in EU

Key points:
  • Apple responds to EU's Digital Markets Act
  • Developers can distribute apps directly from their websites

Apple has announced a significant change in its app ecosystem and business model in the European Union, in response to the EU's Digital Markets Act. The tech giant will now allow iPhone users in Europe to download apps directly from a developer's website. This provides developers with more flexibility for the distribution of their applications and marks a shift from the previous model where apps could only be downloaded through the Apple Store.

Starting this spring, developers in the 27 European Union nations will be able to distribute apps directly from their websites or from alternative marketplaces. This change will be implemented following a software update. Developers will also have the freedom to decide on the appearance of their promotions, discounts, and other deals when linking out to payment websites.

However, despite these changes, developers will still need to comply with Apple’s strict app development rules. This includes Notarization requirements and approval from Apple. This move is part of a series of changes aimed at supporting alternative app stores in the EU and introducing modifications to the App Store and apps specifically for EU users.
