AMZN: Amazon’s Jeff Bezos Elbows Elon Musk Out as World’s Richest Person with $200B Fortune

Tesla CEO has lost more than $31 billion this year, making him the worst money maker in the top 500 list of the world’s wealthiest people.

Key Points:

  • Bezos’ net worth has jumped by $24 billion this year.
  • Musk is first on the loser board, down $31 billion.
  • LVMH chief Bernard Arnault gets third place.
  • Jeff Bezos just leapfrogged Elon Musk to become the world’s richest person. The relentless founder of e-commerce and cloud computing giant Amazon AMZN on Monday topped $200 billion in personal net worth, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Bezos, who was last spotted holding the number one title in late 2021, has picked up $24 billion this year.
  • In contrast, Elon Musk’s wealth has slipped to $198 billion after Tesla’s TSLA dire performance in 2024 has washed out $31 billion from the CEO’s own fortunes. The drop puts him first on the loser board for the year among the top 500 richest people. Third in the unofficial moneymaker rankings is Bernard Arnault, chief executive of luxury goods empire LVMH MC, whose net worth has climbed by $18 billion since January 1 to $197 billion.
  • Back to Bezos, the richest person on earth isn’t exactly sitting on cash piles and backstroking through gold coins à la Scrooge McDuck. Even though he cashed out more than $8.5 billion in recent weeks through share sale, most of that wealth flex is tied to his 9.4% stake in Amazon. Musk owns roughly 20% of all Tesla shares and Bernard Arnault’s family holds 48% of the luxury conglomerate.
