Aerojetis is the supplier of critical inputs for missile systems and hypersonic cruise missiles, it supplies advanced power, propulsion, and armament systems, which are critical components for the missiles made by Lockheed and other defense prime contractors. The agency’s complaint alleges that if the deal is allowed to proceed, Lockheed will use its control of Aerojet to harm rival defense contractors and further consolidate multiple markets critical to national security and defense.

Aerojet still builds the RL10 engines that power the second "Centaur" stage of Vulcan Centaur. That's why -- less than a week after Amazon announced it was awarding 47 launches to ULA -- ULA announced it is ordering 116 RL10C-X rocket engines from Aerojet. Neither Aerojet nor ULA divulged the value of this contract, but according to data from the McNally Institute, Aerojet charges somewhere between $17 million and $20 million per RL10 rocket engine. Thus, 116 of these RL10 engines should be worth anywhere from $2 billion to $2.3 billion in incremental revenue for Aerojet Rocketdyne.

Aerojet Rocketdyne announced April 11 it has received an order from United Launch Alliance for 116 engines for the upper stage of ULA’s Vulcan Centaur rocket. Aerojet said this was the company’s largest ever contract for the RL10 engine. The large purchase of rocket engines comes on the heels of Amazon’s announcement April 5 that it selected Arianespace, Blue Origin and ULA to launch up to 3,236 satellites for its Project Kuiper broadband constellation.
