A Russian man has been charged by U.S. authorities with alleged ties to multiple ransomware schemes that netted him and other attackers nearly $200 million, most of it in cryptocurrencies. Victims of these ransomware attacks include hospitals, schools and police departments. Mikhail Pavlovich Matveev is a member of three ransomware gangs (Lockbit, Babuk and Hive). In total, they received nearly $200 million from victims after demanding more than $400 million in damages, according to the Justice Department. The Justice Department noted that Mateev went by multiple aliases online, including "Wazawaka," "m1x," "Boriselcin" and "Uhodiransomwa." Some of the crimes Mateev is charged with include helping deploy the Babuk ransomware against the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C. in April 2021, and a nonprofit health care organization in New Jersey in May 2022.
