Ohio-based Cleveland-Cliffs plans to begin commercial hot-briquetted iron (HBI) production in the first half of 2020 at its new Toledo, Ohio, plant after wrapping up other upgrades ahead of schedule.
The iron ore producer concluded an upgrade to its Northshore direct reduced iron (DRI) pellet plant in Minnesota earlier than expected, selling 40,000t of feedstock to the planned HBI plant and shifting commissioning up from a previous mid-2020 window.
The completion of the Northshore upgrade provided more visibility on the start-up date and an advanced construction timeline, said Cleveland-Cliffs, the largest US iron ore producer.
The Toledo plant is expected to have a 1.9mn t/yr HBI capacity, up from original estimates of 1.6mn t reflecting greater-than-expected customer demand and capabilities explored during construction.
Once online, the Toledo plant will nearly double US HBI capacity. The only other producer, Voestalpine, operates a 2mn t/yr plant in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Cliffs is the only top player in town!

BEIJING (Reuters) - Roughly half of China’s steel making capacity would have to comply with tough new emissions targets by 2020, according to a draft plan issued by the government and reviewed by Reuters, the latest move by Beijing to clean up its smoke-stack industries.
The plan would require 480 million tonnes of annual capacity in the world’s top steel producer to meet ultra-low emissions standards by 2020, the document issued by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) said.
An official at the MEE confirmed the authenticity of the document, which said the emissions target would rise to 900 million tonnes by 2025.
