ENS could be the parallel service to DNS on Internet.
Names can't travel on Internet. Internet connections happen trough TCP/IP protocol. This protocol needs IPs instead of names.
When you want to access to any website you type the name of the place you want to have a connection. Then that name is sending to a DNS server which returns to your computer the Ip of the website you want to have connection.
Blockchain has been using address instead of names to send/receive any crypto. ENS do the same as DNS servers on Ethereum. Ethereum is growing in many paths. It is necessary to have Ethereum address. It will much more easy to use a name than an address.
