In December 2020, Ethereum began its transition from Proof-Of-Work consensus to Proof-of-Stake consensus. One of the recognized advantages of this validation is that it uses less energy; this should thus allow the world's second largest cryptocurrency to drastically reduce its carbon footprint and thus prevent it from being singled out for this aspect.
