MACYS is being attacked from two sides. It has been depending on commerical real estate sales while its profitability has diminished due to consumers moving to online sales. Now in a potentially depressed post covid 19 commercial real estate collapse and competition from well established online retailers, Macy's is looking more and more like a dinosaur of a previous economic era and soon to be a fossil like JC Pennys.
They missed their chance to develop an online strategy back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The covid 19 shutdown was the final wake up call for Macys but it is unlikely this bohemith can redeploy its resources fast enough to save this titanic of brick and mortar retailers.
